Portrait Concert with Ensemble Modern

Ensemble Modern will present a concert of Hannah's Music at Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Frankfurt on Wednesday 13 May as part of its 'Happy New Ears' series, conducted by Nicolò Umberto Foron. See here for more information. The ensemble will perform shouting forever into the receiver, which was written for them, and premiered at Donaueschinger Musiktage in 2022. The piece went on to win the Ivor Novello Award for Best Large Ensemble Composition in 2023, and is the title track of Hannah's 2025 debut portrait album released on NMC Records. Hannah wrote Even sweetness can scratch the throat in extension to shouting forever into the receiver, which Ensemble Modern will also perform. The piece was shortlisted for a 2023 Ivor Novello Award in the Best Chamber Ensemble Composition category. Both pieces explore aspects of the Plantation Machine, and their titles come from the writing of Ocean Vuong.
